facebook chat problems

March 21st, 2010 Nick No comments

So, it’s come to my attention that facebook chat has one rather annoying bug. If you use a rebranded firefox, the chat merely does not load. It appears that they are checking the useragent of the browser, as opposed to checking for paritcular features and abstracting the functions.

This is a rather annoying problem on ArchLinux. ArchLinux (due to an issue I don’t know anything about) releases Firefox under the project names, such as Shiretoko (Firefox 3.5 or Namoroka (Firefox 3.6). This means that, by default, Firefox on ArchLinux can not use facebook chat at all.

I’d love to see this fixed.

Note: If you are on ArchLinux, you can install and run firebrand from the aur.

FreeBSD: wifi-related kernel panics

October 24th, 2009 Nick No comments

On FreeBSD, I’ve had 13 occurrences of kernel panics under these circumstances as of the time I wrote this.

All occur when I run `sudo /etc/rc.d/netif restart`.
I am not sure what is entirely relevant, so I will list full system specs followed by the output of the kernel panic:

System specs:

  • Sony Vaio Desktop
  • Pentium 3 – 700 MHz
  • 370 MB of SDRAM

Drives:

  • one 60 GB IDE hard drive
  • one IDE CD drive

PCI cards

  • one linksys wireless card (unsure of exact model)
  • one firewire card (provides 2 firewire ports)
  • two NICs

The following is the output of the kernel panic, the last 2 lines appear when i hit the spacebar to abort the reboot:

Fatal trap 12: page fault while in kernel mode
cpuid = 0; apic id = 00
fault virtual address    = 0xc2aee100
fault code               = supervisor read, page not present
instruction pointer      = 0x20:0xc06bbd69
stack pointer            = 0x28:0xc26ebbf8
frame pointer            = 0x28:0xc26ebc00
code segment             = base 0x0, limit 0xfffff, type 0x1b
                         = DPL 0, pres 1, def32, gran 1
processor eflags         = interrupt enabled, resume, IOPL = 0
current process          = 13 (swi4: clock sio)
trap number              = 12
panic: page fault
cpuid = 0
Uptime: 44s
Physical memory: 370 MB
Dumping 44 MB: 29 13
Dump complete
Automatic reboot in 15 seconds - press a key on the console to abort
--> Press a key on the console to reboot,
--> or switch off the system now.

If you have any information on what may cause this or need more information to help, please let me know on IRC (as duckinator or duck[bsd]) or via a comment here.

boredom

January 21st, 2009 Nick No comments

I’m bored, so I decided to make another post on my blog.

For those who know what the Ruby language is, run:

ruby -e "max=7;blk=lambda{|i|puts(('.'*(i*2-1)).center(max*2-1))};1.upto(max-1,&blk);max.downto(1, &blk)"

(Thanks to scott)

For those who dont, that outputs:

      .
     ...
    .....
   .......
  .........
 ...........
.............
 ...........
  .........
   .......
    .....
     ...
      .

Yes, I’m so bored i carefuly copy/pasted a diamond. Yay me.

ANYWAYS

it’s 1:14am, so I’m going to bed….since I’ve been up after 2am for the past 4 nights.

Phone blogging?

January 19th, 2009 Nick 1 comment

I’ve recently had the idea that maybe you can blog and check comments on your blog from your cellphone.

It seems rather interesting to me, I can have a life AND blog (…or, i can start at both :) )

My basic idea for it is this:

  1. You text it (or in my case send a blank pic message, since my phone is CRAP) to blog@duckinator.net
  2. It replies with a list of commands
  3. You send it a command
  4. It gives you a response

Repeat the last 2 as needed.

Most cellphones have a email address in the format of 123456789@tmomail.net (t-mobile’s format).

Given that much, i’ve managed to talk to myself via my cellphone and gmail.

If i figure out smtp (for receiving emails) ….or a way to sortof hijack a webmail site… I can get some automated responses.

Automated responses would eventually lead to being able to request blog entries and/or comments via text message (SMS)

Please leave comments with ideas and suggestions!
